A deck extends the house. A gazebo replaces it. It's the only structure we build that you'll sit in through a downpour and still stay dry — and that one fact changes everything about how it has to be made.
Once there's a roof overhead, this isn't decking anymore. It's a small building: real footings, engineered beams, a roof that has to carry a Toronto February, drainage that puts water somewhere sensible instead of down your neck. It needs a permit, it needs to be square, and it needs to be built by someone who's framed a roof before. That's the part the low bid is quietly leaving out.
choose your structure
Three builds, three jobs.
Shelter, entertaining or a proper poolside room — the right structure depends on what you're actually doing out there. Here's how we help homeowners decide.
Cedar Gazebo
The classic octagonal or rectangular build with a shingled roof and open sides. A destination in the yard — somewhere to walk to, not just something attached to the house.
Open Pavilion
A clear-span roof on posts, sized to cover a dining table, an outdoor kitchen or a hot tub. All of the shelter, none of the walls — and the easiest of the three to build onto a deck.
Pool Cabana
A partly or fully enclosed room: change area, bar, storage, towels, a fridge that isn't in the kitchen. The one that stops wet feet tracking through the house all summer.
The roof
The roof is the whole job.
It's the one line on the quote that separates a gazebo from a pergola with ambitions. A pergola's rafters carry themselves. A roof carries itself, plus whatever February decides to leave on it — and it transfers all of that down through the posts into footings that had better be there.
So we start at the top and work down. Pitch steep enough to shed snow rather than store it. Beams sized to the span and stamped if the city wants them stamped. A tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling, because you'll spend more time looking up at this than at any ceiling in your house. And drainage aimed away from the pool deck instead of onto it.
